I'm definitely with you. As well as Lightning has served me for these years, it may be a relief to finally get rid of all my Lightning cables for a smaller number of "universal" cables, especially if I've been getting them for free when purchasing other devices. However, I definitely enjoy having cords and pairs of Lightning headphones I can leave in my car, desk, and bag and am not looking forward to buying replacements.

I think it’s pretty obvious why Apple never moved to Micro USB — it’s a pretty flimsy, crappy connector that only fits in one direction and can’t handle much power. Lightning is way better and is really why it was invented. And I also honestly believe that Apple being able to quality control any Lightning accessory through the MFi program meant that they could ensure a good experience with anything any Apple user plugged into their iPhones. I also think this is why they took so long to switch to USB-C on the iPhone, their most popular product. With things like the iPad and MacBooks, moving to USB-C became a necessity because of its faster charging and data speeds. iPhones largely don’t have those needs, so they could afford to move slowly, and I think they didn’t feel the need to be early for something that would inevitably annoy some subsection of their customers. Better to annoy nerds than the way bigger non-nerd demographic.

All this said, I really wish “wireless” charging was better. I can’t get over how much power it wastes compared to corded charging. Really hoping Qi2 is better.
